Colour on the ground

despite our best efforts, racism is rife in singapore. that's a fact.

reasons?

lack of interaction and true friendship amongst races.

something must be done.

if you are reading this, i urge you, go out and get to know one more person from another race. be his/her really good friend.

it will take time. it will be difficult. but it has to be done.

Too many typos in the previous post!Anyway, as i was saying...

I always make a point to know my malay friend's culture and why they do the things they do, such as how they feel when their fellow malay friends don't wear tudung or how they feel when we eat pork in front of them..yada yada...Anyway, efforts paid off!! I got invited to her Hari Raya celebration!! Food Food and more Food!!woohoo!)

Well, sometimes, it's not the chinese that is racist but the other races are 'racist' too! They just stick to people of the same colour and language..COMFORT ZONE we're talking about again....hmm...so you shouldn't blame us too much!! =)

I think "lack of interaction" and "lack of true friendship" are not causes of racism. They're more like symptoms of racism. It's because of racist sentiments within individuals that the different races avoid each other. Of course there might also be cultural differences-e.g. language, social customs, etc. One can also be prevented from interacting with other races because of reasons other than pure prejudice.

Despite our best and utmost efforts as a society, eg. racial quotas in HDB estates, civic and moral education, racially-mixed schools, mixing races in National Service etc it seems racist sentiments have roots and genesis which are far deeper than what mere behavioural modification measures can address. I believe it's not the quantity of interaction that matters. If I may quote Feuerstein (shoot me!:D), it's how the experiences that are mediated that determine if someone becomes a racist.
