Demolishing the Tofu
some stupid student blogged about some things that my P said to the whole school. P was basically scolding the school about certain things. the language he used was very harsh and certain terms were used quite loosely. so this stupid student, in a fit of self-righteousness, decided to take issue. he blogged about it, saying some nasty things about the P, claiming that the P is stupid, a lousy leader, bad for the school, etc etc
what this student doesn't know is how much the P has done for the school, how much he has transformed the school from one which people know for being horrible to one which is well-known for being an excellent example of all-round education, from one where students don't want to join, to one which students are fighting to gain admission to.
and so, without knowing the background, and purely based on what he sees superficially, he went on to pontificate, to make himself out to be some courageous and righteous crusader. and while he was at that, he did not suggest any ways to solve/address the problems that made P scold the school in the first place. all this stupid student did was whine, complain. "oh you evil Pricinpal. you scolded us with harsh tones. you are lousy, you are horrible."
i hope that this stupid student is not representative of this generation of youth. alas... it might be. it is a generation which loves to challenge authority. nothing inherently wrong with that, but this is also the generation (or at least those that i have seen) who dare not step up to be the authority. they tell you what they think is wrong, refuse to follow you, but refuse to offer solutions, refuse to take responsibility of leadership. they expect things to be handed to them exactly in the way they want it. they do not know the concept of fighting for what they want, they do not know the concept of seeing past the surface, thinking deep and hard. they do not know how to take hard knocks, to get back up after a trashing and continue fighting.
if my generation is soft (and i think we are), the next is far worse. they do not think they are soft. they think that they are damn bloody good when they are nothing but posers and pretenders.
i know i have written about this before, but being a teacher has made me realise the importance of teachers being firm on students. i am thankful that my class is responding to my firmness (to the point of teacher brutality...). i hope that they will end up all the better for it (i firmly believe they would).
i believe in tough love. spare the rod, spoil the child. i believe that we have to be harsh on our young, tear them down, all the horrible things, the lousy habits, the many character flaws that they have. only then can they be built up, molded into the sort of people that society needs, the sort of people who will lead fulfilling lives.
btw, someone called Ally left a comment on my post about Parental Guidance. Ally, do i know you?

:) i agree. like that student doesn't even bother to see the big picture and instead focuses on the nitty-gritty and jumps to conclusions from there.

After reading your post,I am really disappointed with you, both as a teacher and a friend. You are a great teacher and being in the same family with you during orientation camp really lights up my three days then.
However, openly calling a student stupid is what a student is what teachers SHOULD do?I personally think that what the student was right, pointing out the mistakes.
You were right to say that P did lots of things for JJC and thats something i fully agreed, but making those comments in the name of the welfare of the school,is really not right.Being a Indian myself,i am very affected since the comment the P made because of one Indian.People were calling us gang and all sort of nonsense.Did P think of our feelings and the consequences we have to face and not him?Did he think of what is going to happen to us?It is up to you to answer my questions.
For the way the student phrased his blog,i think its not the most appropriate way of all. However, what he did totally contradict with what you commented on teenagers nowadays. If he is 'soft',why did he bother to risk his safety of a student to question the comment the P made and not teachers? If students like us know that the comments were phrased wrongly or it was completely wrong,i am pretty sure that teachers are not dumb to the extent where they think it is right to say WE are gangsters! In fact i think teachers like you are 'soft',calling a student stupid behind his back and not questioning the way the P addressed sensitive issues.
I think the student is brave and smart to question and critised the comment the P made.I applaud him for his intention of making known to others what he wants the P to change his way of addressing the student body and inter-personal communication but not for the way he blogged about it.At least he tried and knowing he was wrong, he apologised. How many students do we see nowadays who dare to stand up and question the head?Do you,oh so macho, tall, loud man?Going back to the topic, did P apologise to the other Indians who were somehow drag into the topic 'gang'?If he does not know that he really hurt my feelings, then why is justice?I respect him for the contributions he made for the school, but having contributed so much to the school should not cover a small comment raised across the school which hurt so many of us.
The whole incident is like a mirror. When the principal is scolding the blogger,he is scolding himself. If he did not raise the issue in such a crude way, then why would the student have the chance to blog about the incident in such a crude way?
The student apologised to the principal and i think Mr Chua you should too apologise to the student you called stupid. Both of you are man,and both of you scolded people using 'underhand moves'.Is that gentlemen act? No?Then i think a apology is needed from you if not all respect for you as my teacher, friend and man is all lost.
I am challenging you to accept my comment as a man.

sure, spare the rod, spoil the child. we understand that.
i know we're pretty spoiled, we want things our way and we bitch about everything under the sun. apparently, we aint called "strawberries" for nothin. BUT that's BESIDES the point.
P can be a great leader, yada yada.. (ventures out into all the contributions he's done, etc) BUT that doesn't mean he HAS the right to NOT take responsibility for what he's saying. you get me? have you realised there are certain things in which he's said have a direct discrimination against some of our kids in the school? we're talkin bout the head of the institution here, sir. someone who should command our respect, someone who SEES the school as a huge family and creates bonding as a whole.
unneccessary sweeping statements can actually get people into a fit, especially towards those being directed at. there are certain times where we merely scoffed at how ridiculous his viewpoints are, dismissing them as ramblings from yet another middle-aged man experiencing menopause and probably, you know, undersexed. in addition to that, we forgive him for his lousy grammar despite him muttering wrong usages over the microphone every single day. it's tough being the audience, ya know.
we don't expect much, seriously. contrary to your beliefs, we don't actually CARE about being authorities of the school. we just NEED some leader we can connect with, someone who can actually rally us around and make us feel WORTH being rallied around. we dont need people to tell us we're stupid, dont need criticisms because we're far smarter than you can imagine. well, simply put, most of us are intellectual beings who know what we're sayin. and we're saying, irrational statements put forth by mr P gets to us REAL bad.
despite all you've ranted about, nah, we don't give a damn about challenging authorities. well, unless we're treated otherwise by them, we don't exactly complain much. most of us feel good about the school, we actually do look forward to school and on the whole, we do feel a sense of belonging. it's just that, there are some things that require some form of addressing, and im back to the point whereby we need a leader who takes responsiblity for what he says. we dont need constant criticisms and baseless judgements, period.
well that's about it. considering the length of my comment, im not actually hyped up about such issues. it's actually pretty droning, this crap.
why not suggest a late-night out with that old boy? maybe some talking into may help ;)

to the FIRST ANONYMOUS:
(a) why are you bothering to read these 'entries' if you disagree with them? get out, and get a life. please. if you think Mr. Chua is brainless, poser, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, then SO ARE YOU!!! you're a POSER if you keep commenting like this and not put your own name down on the post!!! COWARD!!!!!!!!!!
(b) since when did he think everyone likes him??? just as much as you think you're a good student to hide behind your profanity, right? acting the 'vigilante' and all. HA, HA, HA. GROW UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(c) so now you're suggesting Mr. Koh reads Mr. Chua's blog???? exactly how much time do you think our principal has??? obviously he makes full use of his time, NOT SOMEONE WHO GOES AROUND SLANDERING AND PROFANING OTHERS' OPINIONS WHEN THEY DON'T EVEN CONCERN YOU!!!!!!!!!
(d) of course not everyone 'works well' for Mr. Chua's teachings. PEOPLE LIKE YOU DON'T. and you know what??? GOOD!!!!! it shows that you don't have a brain to think about whether his comments are valid or right or not!!!!!!
(e) WHO IS MR. CHUA COPYING?????? YOU??????????????? give me another barrel of laughs, because this one is already splitting my sides. IT'S HIS OWN OPINION. HIS OWN OPINION, if you can somehow fit that into my pathetically lacking brain. oh, my mistake. do you even have anything in your head that resembles something called GRAY MATTER???????? i'm guessing...
NO.
(f) what? i'm a scholar. and you know what? i don't think you're a scholar. it's because only SMART, RATIONAL-THINKING people get into the scholars' program or be a scholar!!!!! SO YOU'RE CLEARLY NOT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(g) yeah, all that profanity really is going to get you somewhere. IN A COURT WHERE MANY, MANY PEOPLE WILL BE SUING YOU FOR LIBEL OR SLANDER. OR OUT OF A JOB WHEN YOUR BOSS KICKS YOU OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(h) nice grammer, too. NOT!!!!!!
and if you think that the teachers and the P are alone in this, you are WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dead wrong.
and we're not going to let the likes of you, Mr. or Ms. Vulgarity-Without-A-Brain, spoil our reputation, our school name, and the good that has been done to, for and from this school!!!!!!!!!!!

you sounded like you were hyper-ventilating, hopefully you werent, ha. no point gettin some love for your beloved teacher, practise tough love ;)
